How to Ask for (and Get) a Pay Raise

How to Ask for (and Get) a Pay RaiseHow to Ask for (and Get) a Pay RaiseYou are long overdue for a raise, and your anfhrer doesnt seem to be doing anything about giving you one. Even if youknow you deserve a higher salary, you, like many people, may be hesitant to ask for a raise. You have three options. You can do bedrngnishing, but then you may stay at the same salary indefinitely. You can look for a job that pays more, or you can ask for a raise. Clearly, sitting around and waiting for your boss to make the first move hasnt worked so far, and looking for another job can be a big hassle. What are you waiting for? Heres how to ask for a raise. What Are Others in Your Field Earning Before approaching your boss, you need to do some research. Its time to learn about typical salaries in your field so that you can then figure out if you are earning less than you should. You can try talking to colleagues in your field. Be forewarned, however, that many people are reluctant to discuss money. You can also get salary information from published resources. Websites like O*Net Onlinepublish median salaries for a variety of occupations based on government data. You can even find salary information by state. If you belong to a professional association, check to see if it has salary information available. Begin by looking at the organizations website. Glassdoor.com is also an excellent resource for salary information. Figure Out How Much You Can Earn Remember that because of factors like education and experience, your salary may differ quite a bit from the median published salary for your field. You must be realistic when thinking about your expectations. Consider the number of years youve been working in the field, your education and credentials, and the length of time youve worked for your current employer. You should even take the location of your job into account. Jobs in major cities, for instance, usually pay more than ones in small towns. Evaluate the Fina ncial Health of Your Employer Be very cautious about your zeiteinteilung. Dont ask for a raise if you know your employer is having financial problems or if there is a lot of uncertainty in the industry. While, as an employee, you are probably well aware of your companys financial health, you shouldnt rely only on what you observe. Do some company research, which includes looking at financial reports and following business news. Prepare Your Case Once you are sure the timing is right and you have all the relevant information, get ready to meet with your boss. Start preparing to make a case for your raise. Even though you think you deserve one, that might not be as obvious to your boss. Its up to you to convince him. Sell yourself just as you would if you were trying to get a prospective employer to hire you. First, make a list of all your accomplishments. Start with the most recent ones and work your way backward. Describe how those accomplishments benefited your employer. Be ver y specific. For example, dont just say you increased profits. Prepare to tell your boss how much they rose and what role you played in making that happen. Next, make a list of your relevant skills - what makes you successful at work. Include your hard and soft skills. Finally, get ready to describe all the things you plan to do for the organization in the future. Remember to give details What If You Get Turned Down or Dont Get the Salary Increase You Want Before you walk into your bosss office to ask for a raise, think about what you will do if she says no or agrees to give you one that is much smaller than what you want. Will you quit your job or will you wait a while and then ask for a raise at a later date? Your answer may depend on what your boss says. For example, has she turned you down because of your performance or because of other circumstances? Set Up an Appointment Now that youve done all the preparation, its finally time to speak to your boss. It is not somethi ng you should discuss with him in passing - its serious business. Treat it as if it were a meeting with a client or a job interview. Set up an appointment to discuss your request. Dont ask for a raise by email, at the water cooler, or by telephone. The only reason for not having this conversation face-to-face is if you and your boss dont work at the same location. Present Your Case Your boss may agree to give you a raise immediately. Wouldnt that be nice? You may have to do nothing more than askher for one, which may leave you wondering why she didnt offer before you asked. It is more likely you will have to present the material you gathered. Stay calm and stick to the facts. Getting emotional will not benefit you, and may even harm your negotiations. Dont bring up your personal expenses because they are not your bosss problem. In your employers eyes, your salary has everything to do with how you benefit the employer and nothing to do with your needs. Respond to a No Your b oss may turn you down. What should you do next? It all depends on the reasons he gives you. If he says he is rejecting your request because of your performance, you have to decide if hisfeedbackis valid. If it is, think about what changes you can make to turn things around. If you conclude that your boss is just making excuses and his criticism of your performance isnt valid, you may want to go where you will be appreciated. Find out if there is any chance the situation will change. If you learn that is a possibility, get your boss to commit to a time to revisit your request. For example, you might want to have another conversation during your next ?performance review. Ask your boss to help you come up with a plan for what you will need to do to improve your chances of getting a raise by that time.??

4 Career Revelations From My 20s

4 Career Revelations From My 20s4 Career Revelations From My 20sI graduated from college more than 10 years ago and like every new graduate, I felt fear, anxiety and confusion curse through my body from the realization that I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. Working as an assistant at a market research company, surrounded by market analysts who were highly regarded as experts in their fields, I wondered what it would take to rise through the ranks and be as admired and respected as my colleagues were.In particular, I marveled at the female analysts with whom I worked. On telephone calls with the media and onstage at conferences, they exuded such confidence and were so knowledgeable on their topics of study. I wondered Would that ever be me? Do I have what it takes? What should I do to try to get tzu siche, or anywhere, for that matter? This was before the days of LinkedIn, Facebook, About.me and any other online directory. So you might wonder how did a directionless but motiva ted 20-something, new to the working world but determined to make good professional choices, secure much-desired career guidance without the benefit of studying (for the purposes of emulating) the biographies of those she admired? This is how she identified people who intrigued her. She approached them and very simply, yet earnestly stated, My name is Stephanie and I feel lost. I want to know about your life. I want to know what you did right. I want to know the things you would have done differently. I want to know what you wish you would have known when you were my age. Can you spare a moment in your busy schedule to speak with me?After sharing this story with a friend, he quickly concluded, Oh cool, you sought out a mentorearly in your career. While this is technically true, I felt that this label missed the mark. A mentorship implies a structured and focused course of discussion. Contrarily, what really took place were freeform, nearly meandering conversations, which yielded some of the fruchtwein important revelations in my life. Moreover, I still keep these life lessons in mind as I navigate my career and my life.My favorite revelations from these conversations1) Most career paths are more circuitous than they may appear. We are groomed to always have, know and cultivate our story- to pitch our lives as if every step in our careers was planned and purposeful. In an age where we carefully edit our life experiences on our online profiles, we forget that people move from zigging to zagging (and then right back to zigging like they were before). In my conversations with colleagues they often admitted, I tried this for a while, and I hated that. So, then I thought, maybe this I did that instead and that turned into this other thing This helped me to realize that plans are sometimes unplanned and come into existence by accident or unintentionally. Choices are never permanent and within reason, you can change your mind, change your direction, make a mistake and c orrect the course you initially chose to take.2) Life can be better understood by evaluating options that are not chosen. Each of our life stories is an aggregate of the choices that we have made. However, the value of life can be understood in a richer context by examining the unchosen choices, understanding the reasons why they werent selected and conjecturing how things might have turned out if they had. I enjoyed hearing my colleagues describe the potential paths their lives could have taken the jobs they didnt take, the partners they turned down, the decisions they delayed, and the options they abandoned altogether. It helped me to better understand who they were and how they ended up in their current roles. Also, I realized that my life would be a Choose Your Own Adventure, and only I could choose the next exciting turn of the plot line.3) Serendipity plays a big role in how things play out.In a meritocracy, we like to believe that hard work drives what we accomplish. We prepa red for an interview and got that dream job. We worked very hard and were promoted to a higher-level position. Yet, the truth is sometimes things around us happen and we are merely the lucky recipients of these unpredictable occurrences. My colleagues shared circumstances that were outside of their control and led to developments in their careers. For example, someone vacating a position enabled him or her to advance in a new role. Meanwhile, someone else quickly landed a job where the original description of that role changed completely. This made me feel hopeful and it made me realize that I should focus on what I could actually control while being open to, and ready for, any luck that may come my way.4) Everyone struggles in their 20s. Everyone. A lucky few realize exactly what they were put on this earth to do at a young age. In fact, I remember having a conversation with the college counselor at my high school when I was younger, and she rather snarkily observed, People who kno w exactly what they are meant to do at a young age are just doing exactly what their parents have always told them they should do If given the chance, I suspect that any sophisticated, accomplished professional will tell you, I was a mess when I was your age and then detail an existence rife with befuddlement or distress that eerily mirrors your current situation. Hearing this admission helped me manage my insecurities and fears. It was also comforting to know that I wasnt alone in my experiences.Working at Simply Hired, where effort is focused on making the job search process efficient and fast through technology, it may sound strange for me to extol the merits of putting down technological devices and reaching out to one another as human beings. But what Im trying to say, and I hope you will agree, is that important details can be missed and facts can be misrepresented or misinterpreted in an online-only world. These minutiae can only be discovered, digested and savored if we stop , turn to one another, and casually say, Hello.

Employee Referrals Latest Trends You Might Want to Consider

Employee Referrals Latest Trends You Might Want to Consider Employee referral programs have long been attributed with numerous benefits, which include speedy and quality hires and better performance and retention at lower costs than other recruiting sources. These known benefits have provided ample motivation to recruiting professionals to discover new ways of acquiring referrals. In the late 1990s when employee referral programs were nowhere in the radar, Cisco came up with the Cisco Friends concept giving candidates an opportunity to connect with Cisco employees to know mora about the company and the job openings rather than just sending in their profile. Realizing early on that employees were in the best position to promote the company to prospective candidates, Cisco managed to source 50-60 percent of its talent requirements through this initiative in a tight IT talent market. The astounding success of the program demonstrated for the first time the tremendous benefits that could accrue from leveraging your entire employee workforce as recruiting partners. Not only did it help recruit better quality talent with higher productivity but in fact also helped to close positions much faster as compared to traditional recruiting channels.Times have certainly changed since then with employee referral programs now occupying center stage in all recruitment initiatives. However, as the war for talent further intensifies in the years to come, organizations will need to start thinking differently about the manner in which they design, implement and manage their referral programs to ensure they remain ahead of their competitors in the hunt for talent. Some organizations have already started experimenting with and implementing new referral techniques others have yet to accept this trend completely but all in all new and innovative experiments with employee referral programs will certa inly gain popularity in the years to come.Below are some of the recent trends in referral recruiting that recruiters and organizations alike should be looking to adopt in the future.Employee Referral programs will become more scientific as data metrics will drive decision making toward specialized or focused referrals targeting specific referral groups, be it college referrals, high performer referrals or specific skill referrals. A host of organizations, including Oracle, use data driven decision making to ensure referral campaigns are targeted toward specific employee groups to ensure greater effectiveness.Reward Schemes that go beyond cash incentives and are more inclusive in nature are going to become more dominant in employee referral programs as organizations look to reward employees not only for successful referral applications but also for participating in the program irrespective of the outcome. Accenture, for instance, rewards 100 EUR to all employees whose referrals are c alled in for an interview. Employees whose referrals are hired are invited to participate in a lucky draw with exciting prizes (like world trips) to ensure that employees remain excited and motivated to participate in the program.Employees will soon have the flexibility to upload the social media profiles of their connections rather than go through the hassle of securing their updated resumes and then uploading it on the referral site. This is something that is already being practiced in most organizations. In fact, with specialized employee referral tools like ZALP available in the market today, enabling this has become a low cost and high ROI affair. Enabling social profiles, especially LinkedIn profiles, will also open the door for actively targeting passive candidates for open positions as employees will be encouraged to actively seek out social connections that match the job descriptions but are not actively seeking a change. Microsoft is a big believer in harnessing the power of social media for driving referrals. Its Spreadthelove program allows employees to create individual stories including videos, pictures, graphics and testimonials regarding their work and life at Microsoft and then share the link to Spreadtheirlove about Microsoft on social sites with friends and family, including potential candidates.Referral programs will move toward introducing gamification in a big way to stimulate internal competition. Many organizations have already started making way for this trend while others are still skeptical about it. Accenture has an employee scorecard where employees can track the progress of their referral and the amount of bonus they have collected by participating in the referral policy. TCS and Aricent, on the other hand, hold contests and share dashboards capturing referral successes across the organization to foster competition among business units and employees. As employees start referring anyone and everyone in an effort to make some extra m oney out of the referral policy, organizations will also have to start looking at ways of discouraging low-quality referrals. For instance, Agilent requires employees to assess every referrals skills, experience and cultural fit. Employees are also asked to rate their knowledge of the candidate on a scale of 1 to 10 to ensure that random referrals are identified early on in the process helping Agilent save precious recruiting time.A final major trend that has already gone mainstream as far as employee referral programs are concerned is the use of a mobile platform. Almost all organizations claiming to use referral programs for recruiting have ensured a mobile friendly referral portal giving employees the opportunity to refer-on-the-go directly from their mobile phones and tablets. This is a great value addition, especially since more and more people today use their smart phones for virtually everything.
